1. Levin Sr.1 SAVAGE, born 1750 in , Accomack, VA; deceased abt. 1837 in , Jackson, TN. He married (1) abt. 1772, Mary Sarah MARTIN. He married (2) Elizabeth.

MARRIAGE: No absolute proof of Levin's wives. His Bible says that he married "Miss Martin" . I have read that this was Sarah. Wife number 2 is said to be Elizabeth, thought also to be a Martin. Levin's first child was his son, Martin, b.ca.1773-4. His next child was probably Hamilton, born probably ca.1780-1. So -- was Martin the only child of Levin's 1st wife? ; Hamilton then being the first child of 2nd wife Elizabeth? We really don't know the birth order of, or even the names of, all of his children.
1790 Census -- was living in Salisbury Dist., Surry Co., NC.
1800 Census -- still in Surry Co., NC.
Hugh Brown (in letter to Donita) says,"Leven [sic] Sr. lived in Surry County and probably Rowan Co., NC until 1805. We have church records in Rowan Co. and know he had property in Surry Co. At that time the 2 counties joined each other. I think most of the children were born in Surry Co.".
He also says that "the church in Monroe Co., KY where all the Savages attended... was about 2 miles from Celina, TN. .... This church existed from 1827 - 1844". I looked on the atlas , and Tompkinsville, Monroe Co., KY and Celina, Clay Co., TN are very close to each other - - just across the border!
Levin Sr. (along with son Hamilton) went to KY in 1807; both took grants as listed in "Grants South of the Green River" (per letter from Gladys to Donita, Feb 17, 1988).
1810 Census -- Levin and son Hamilton were both in Cumberland Co., KY, #177.
Levin supposedly sold his KY land grant to son Hamilton in 1816.
1820 Census -- Cumberland Co., KY -- Hamilton and Martin living next door to each other; ther e was also a Martin Savage in the 26-45 age range(and there was a William Martin). Need to verify that Levin was gone, probably in NC.
There may have been another son, Drury, b. ca. 1785 in NC -- per posting on rootsweb genconne ct/Sandra Lee (she gives the name and date; his relationship is my guess).

Gladys in her book says that Peter is supposed to have gone to McDonald Co., MO, on a Mexica n War grant, and then is not found after 1835. ** On the 1840 AIS, there are the following Peter Savages: Bureau Co., IL #200 Greene Co., IL #069 Taylors Precinct Herkimer Co.,NY #024 Herkimer Mobile Co., AL #107 Savannah Co., GA #041 2nd Dist. Decker Ward (this X2) Have not checked out these individuals. I lean toward one of the 2 who went to IL. A Hugh Brown sent info to Donita that this Peter moved to Morgan Co., IL, with his brother Jo hn (and possibly died 1830-40).

Middle name "Henry" comes from the web site of Teresa Shands.
He is listed in Levin Sr.'s Bible following Hamilton. The Bible says William married Lucie Peak. In the 1850 TN census, William gives his age as 56, and -- that he was born in SC!! [Could this be a mistake? S/be NC!!!] They were living in "Ma" county, but I didn't note which county that is.
In the 1860 TN census, William is apparently deceased. Lucy is listed at age 50(in the 185 0 census, she gave her age as 54); living with her are Henry 28, Frances 23, and Susan 21. They are still living in "Ma" County.

In 1833, Martin, Hamilton, and Levin Jr., were living in Hardeman Co., TN.

Soon after his marriage (ca. 1798), he moved to KY (per son Jefferson's headstone).
At age 21 (ca 1802) he received from the State of NC 640 acres; he paid . The land was "o n a ridge west of a draft of Beanhole Ck. on the N.side of the old Richmond Road". Don't kno w the county in which this land was located (Yadkin Co., formed from Surry Co., in 1850???).
In 1810, Hamilton and his father, Levin Sr., lived side by side on McFarland Creek, in KY.
1820 census: Hamilton along with his bro. Martin were in Cumberland Co., KY.
1824 -- Hamilton moved to TN from KY (per son Jefferson's headstone).
1830 census: Hamilton (spelled Hambleton) and bro. Martin were in Hardeman Co., TN; no twp. l isted.
1832 (prob. tax list) -- Hambleton Savage in Hardeman Co., TN.
In 1833, Hamilton was living in Hardeman Co., TN, as were his brothers Martin Sr. and Levin J r.
CHILDREN: I think that his first child, Martin, was born (21 Oct 1799) in either NC or KY, de pending on if they moved before or after (or during?) their move. I think the rest of the ch ildren were all born in KY, Cumberland County.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN: For marriage info with Polly Longdon, see below under Military. As far as we know now, Levin was just married twice. Mary "Polly" is supposed to have died around Dec 1867-Jan 1868[per Rachel's pension app.), in which case, Andrew Jackson could have been her son, not Rachel's. HOWEVER-- Mary is listed as 80 in the 1860 census, so my guess is that there was a little "hanky panky" between Levin (70 in 1860) and Rachel (16 in 1860), and that after Mary's death, Levin and Rachel married -- fairly quickly it looks like.
New thought -- Levin wrote his will 18 Mar 1878; he names only Julia Ann as his child (Mary Belle wasn't born until 2 months after Levin died in 1881). Andrew Jackson was born in 1865 , before Mary "Polly" had died. Maybe Andrew Jackson was Rachel's illegitimate son!!! He would have been only about 13 at the time that Levin wrote his will, so should have been named . Did the "old man" Levin marry the young woman Rachel to give her illigitimate son a name , a home, and a father?
He also names his home as being on Proctors Creek in the 2 Civil District of Clay County, TN , containing 40 or 50 acres.
He did not sign his will; just made his mark; so apparently he could not write. Read???

DEATH: Supposedly died of "kidney trouble" -- or, was having kidney trouble at the time of his death.
BURIAL: In a 9/20/1987 letter from Marilyn Brown to Donita, Marilyn says "Leven Jr.'s grave is out on Proctor Creek. It's on private property about a mile off the highway. It's the Coe-Stone Cemetery". I suspect that, as his land that he lived on was on Proctor's Creek, that he was buried on his land, which eventually came to be owned by others, possibly descendant’s of Levin Jr.'s son Jesse who married Jemima COE.
MILITARY: Vet of War of 1812; rec'd pension. Have his pension app. in the binder, "Act of Feb. 1871", applied in Monroe Co., KY, 1 May 1871. He was age 80. Said he was a resident of Clay, formerly Jackson, Co., TN. Wife's name is Polly Longden, whom he married at Monroe Co., KY [Monroe wasn't created until 1820, so it actually would have been Cumberland Co.] in December of 1812. War of 1812, he enlisted in Capt. Samuel Wilson's Co., Col. Tall's Reg., John E. King's Brigade, Shelby's Division -- at Burksville, Cumberland Co., KY, on 19 Aug 1813 ; discharged the same place, Nov. 1813. Was a private; was in the Battle of the River Thames .
RESIDENCES:
1830 -- Jackson Co., TN, 178/428 -- Laven age 62; Polly age 70. I have read that in 1833 he was living in Hardeman Co., TN, near Hamilton and Martin, however, I believe that Levin to be Levin Sr., father of Hamilton, Martin, and the "Laven" in Jackson Co. in 1830.

I made a note on the FGS that "witnesses to Rachel and Levin's wedding say it occurred at his house in Jackson Co., TN, 10 Dec 1868. Rachel's statement: she said their marriage occurred in Jan. of 1868 "near Celina".

BURIAL: Apparently Levin Jr. was buried beside/near her; neither has a stone.
MARRIAGE: They were married in the part of Cumberland Co., KY, that is now Monroe Co.

She is listed by herself on the 1860 TN census, aged 16, Jackson Co., TN, 103/305.
I think the Odles must have been some sort of relation to the Savages. Also on the 1860 TN census, Ann Odle, age 16 [twin of Rachel??] was living with Levin Jr. and his then wife Mary " Polly" (Longdon) Savage. There was also a Charles Odle, age 21, living with William Savag [sic] on the 1860 TN census, Jackson Co. Actually -- I think Rachel must have been living with someone, not living alone; Charles and Ann are both listed "alone", but they also show up living with someone else, indicated by an * by their name. Rachel also has an * by her name . There is also an Andrew J. Odle, age 17, shown living with William Odle and his family.
Rachel gave testimony [don't have it in front of me now; can't remember what it was]. She said she and Levin (Jr.) were married Jan of 1868, near Celina, by Robt. Brown, J.P.

Her maiden name was Rebecca Ingram, she was a niece of Jenie Savage and sister to Wm. Ingram of Hastain. She was married 11 years ago to Albert Crabtree. Three children blessed their union, wh o are yet small. On August 4, her remains were taken to the Crabtree burying ground two miles north of Fairfield and there laid to rest".

See his obit, Vol. 2, p. 52n. He died at his home in Warsaw (presume this means their house in town). Funeral was held at the residence, and burial at Riverside Cem., Warsaw. His death was due to "pneumonia, after a brief illness".
OCCUPATION: stock trader and farmer.
At the time of his death, Horace was in TX, Mattie was in NM, and James was living in Louisia na; just says Harvey arrived on Thursday.
RELIGION: Says he was a member of the M. E. South Church for over 40 years.
RESIDENCE: Born in Scott Co., IL; came to MO in 1859; lived continuously thereafter in Bent on Co. "on the Osage River, 3 miles east of Warsaw".

I have a copy of their marriage license in my files. Abe and Martha were married 20 Dec 1888 , at her parents' home, by James R. Jones, J. P.. Jerry had to give his consent for Martha , because she was under the age of 18. Thus, I am going to assume that Martha was, in fact , born in 1871. In 1888, she would have only been 17-1/2 on the day of their wedding.She would have turned 18 on 7 Aug 1889. Martha was listed as "of the County of Benton", and her parents were living in Benton Co. at the time of this wedding. I also have a copy of Abe and Martha's divorce papers. They were filed on 3 Sep 1894. She was listed as "Mattie Hughes", plaintiff, and he was listed as "A. D. Hughes", defendant . Martha taught school in Gibson, NM (3 mi. N of Gallup) ca. 1903-1915, -- and apparently she was teaching children of mine workers. Gibson was a coal mining town. Pop. 600 in 1905. Martha also taught in Lewiston, UT, and was there when her mother died in 1916. At some point after UT, Martha moved to California, where she lived until her death.
