Generation 1

Migrating to KY before 1817, he is found on the 1820 census of Monroe Co. KY and the 1822 Tax List as Richard Skipper. On the 1823 Tax List, he is shown as Richard Skipworth, and is found in records as such from then on. He lived in or near Martinsburg, KY, which was the first Cumberland River landing north of the TN border in the area adjoining Jackson Co. TN. In 1830, he is found on the Cumberland Co. KY census and in 1840 the family is in Warren Co. KY. He is listed on the 1850 Death Index for Illinois as age 73, b. SC, deceased Mar 1850 in Jackson Co IL. Census records indicate at least 8 sons, and one daughter.

Generation 2
The following children of Richard are not all proven at this time, though the areas they are found in makes it likely and the ages fit the census records for Richard in KY. I believe when all is said and done, this will prove to be correct.

I. REDDING,b. 1803 NC or SC;d. 28 Oct 1878 Vermilion Co IL. Buried in Springhill Cemetery. He married abt 1828,probably in KY, (1) CATHERINE ____,b. abt 1806 KY;d. abt 1853 Marion Co. MO or Perry Co. IL. He married 17 Nov 1854 in Perry Co IL (2) Mary BENNET; 23 Feb 1859 in Perry Co IL (3) MRS. LOUISA HUFF; 10 Apr 1862 in Perry Co IL (4) ELISA TINSLEY; 27 Jan 1864 in Marion Co IL (5) MALVINA BORDEN JENNINGS.

Redding is found on the 1830 census for Monroe Co KY,(online transcription shows name as 'Skipwalt'; A.I.S. census index spells it 'Shipmeth' ) On tax rolls the surname is spelled correctly, but in one instance, his first name is shown as "Rubin". In 1850 he and his family are on the Marion Co MO census, in 1860 they are in Perry Co.IL, which neighbors Jackson Co. In 1870, he and his 5th wife, Malvina are found in Vermilion Co IL, transcription spells name as "Shipworth".

Children of Redding and Catherine were as follows:
1. JAMES W.,b. abt 1829 KY. James was blind, according to the 1860 census.
2. MARY "POLLY" ANN,b. 1831 KY. She married 10 Feb 1856 in Marion Co IL JAMES THOMPSON.
3. PATSY JANE,b. abt 1834 KY
4. SARAH M.,b. abt 1836 KY
5. CATHERINE F.,b. abt 1838 -1841 KY. She married 12 Mar 1861 in Perry Co. IL HARRISON HICKS. In the 1860 census for Franklin Co IL, Catherine is working as a domestic in Harrison's household. Census differs on her age.
6. ELIZABETH,b. abt 1842 MO. Believe she married 12/14/1862 Franklin Co JAMES HILL. The transciption of the marriage record shows her name as SCIPHOITH.
7. JEMIMA B.,b. abt 1846 MO.
8. RICHARD F.,b. abt 1849 MO.

Children of Redding and Malvina were as follows:
1. FRANK, b. abt 1868 probably Perry Co IL.
2. HARVEY,b. abt 1875,probably Vermilion Co IL.

Note: Melvina remarried 11 Feb 1880 Vermillion Co IL to JACOB COON and they moved to Warren Co IN, where they are found on the 1880 census.
I am still looking for any children that Redding may have had with the other wives.

II. JAMES B.,b. abt 1805/06 NC,TN or KY;d. abt 1886 Clay Co TN. He married abt 1824 in KY or TN MARY "POLLY" RICH,b. 30 Nov 1808,Surry Co NC,the daughter of JESSEE RICH and ELIZABETH SAVAGE. Early deeds for Cumberland Co KY (later Monroe Co.; also some of this land is now in TN) show that Mary's RICH and SAVAGE families lived along McFarland Creek, which joins the Cumberland River at a point just a couple of miles south of Martinsburg, KY. This area was part of the 6 mile stretch involved in the Walker's Line dispute, and was alternately located in TN and KY until the boundary of the two states was finally settled. James and Mary lived their adult lives in Overton Co TN and in Celina,Jackson(later Clay)Co. TN, which was 5.5 River Miles south of Martinsburg,KY.

1850 Census indicates James was born in TN., the 1880 Census indicates he was born in NC., with both parents born in SC.
James B., was first found in Overton Co.in 1830 and 1840, then Jackson, later Clay Co TN.
Clay County, TN was formed from sections of Jackson County & Overton County, TN in 1870.

James walked back from New Orleans, LA., 13 times to his home in Jackson County TN. His trip from Jackson County to New Orleans was on flat boats loaded with farm produce of tobacco, corn and stock which was the only way to market your produce in those days, and with great danger. The trip to New Orleans by boat took about 7-8 days.

Children of James and Mary were as follows:
1. UNKNOWN SON,found on 1830 census, under 5 years of age, d. before 1840.
2. UNKNOWN SON,found on 1830 census, age 5-10, d. before 1840.
3. LOUISA, b. March 09, 1827, Jackson TN; d. November 17, 1894, Clay Co TN. She married ELIJAH CROSS SMITH.
4.GEORGE WASHINGTON,b. May 16, 1832, Jackson Co TN; d.September 27, 1914, Ardmore OK. He married (1) ELIZABETH HARLAN. He married (2) LAURA STRAUGHAN.

11.AUSMAN B.,b. March 01, 1850, Jackson Co TN; d. June 27, 1904, Fannin Co TX. He married MARTHA ANN BURNETT,the daughter of MOSES BURNETT and ESTHER POTTER. Ausman's date of birth taken from his tombstone in Sears/Lindsay Springs Cemetery, near Whitewright, Grayson Co TX.
12.BENJAMIN FRANKLIN,b. June 1852, TN;d.aft 1890 Grayson Co. TX. He married FRANCES BAILEY.

III. ASHFORD,b.24 Sept 1810 in TN or VA, (two censuses say TN, two say VA);d.18 Dec 1882 Cumberland Co KY. He married FRANCES "FANNY" SCOTT,b. 1810 VA or KY, daughter of CLEMENT SCOTT, who named her in his will as "Fanny Skipper", his executor was "Ashford Skipper", which proves that Ashford, like Richard, also used the name Skipper at times. On the 1834 tax roll for Monroe Co. KY, Ashford Skipworth is listed, as are Richard and "Redin" (Redding). Richard was in Cumberland Co in 1830, which is where Ashford settled, his first land grant dated 1838 on Potter's Creek. Ashford's son Milton W. owed money to James B.'s son George W. at the time of M.W.'s death in 1864. There was a marriage between Ashford's line and James B.'s: Nola, daughter of Newton Varny, married as her second husband Clarence Henry Skipworth, son of John Martin Skipworth and Mary Henley Paull. And James Allen, son of Ashford,is found in Wilbarger Co TX on the 1910 census, which is also where two of James's grandsons, Perry and Ausman (Boney) settled, though it appears that James Allen was there at least a few years earlier.

I don't know if we will ever find absolute proof of the connection, but it seems obvious that there was one. If Richard was in TN in 1810, when Ashford was born, there are no census records available for northern TN that year and few tax rolls,so it will be hard to prove. I think it unlikely he was in VA, but it is possible.

Children of Ashford and Fanny were as follows:
1. MILTON WALKER, b. abt 1834 KY; d. bef 18 Sept 1864 IN. He married SUSANNAH CLOYD, daughter of CARY HARRISON CLOYD and NANCY SPEARMAN. After Milton died in Indiana, Susannah returned to Ky. Ashford then became guardian of their children. An appraisement of M.W.'s estate was order 18 Sept 1864 & certified in court on 01 Oct 1864, and included in the appraisement was:
"one note owed G.W. Skipworth 25 (dollars)
Due 10th September 1861".
This was George W. Skipworth, son of James B.
Ashford settled M.W.'s estate in May 1866.

2. NANCY JANE,b. June 4,1836; d. abt 1922 MO. She married Thomas WILLIAMS.
3. ELIZABETH "BESSIE",b. Mar 4,1838. She married GOVERNOR H. HOOD.
4. JAMES ALLEN,b. Feb 4, 1842. He married SARAH E. JOHNSON.

6. THOMAS JEFFERSON,b.July 6, 1847. He married ISABELLA SCOTT,daughter of SOLOMON SCOTT.
7. JOSEPH HENRY,b. Sept 6, 1851. He married AMANDA FRENCH.

IV. JEREMIAH,b. abt 1817 KY;d.abt 1854 Jackson Co. IL. He married 24 Nov 1842 in Williamson Co IL (1) ELIZABETH TEAL/TEEL. He married 05 Sept 1853 in Jackson Co. IL (2) MRS. MARY JANE JOHNSON. Jeremiah is found on the Muster Roll of the Mountain District Volunteers in Overton Co. TN 1836/37. Jeremiah was administrator of his father's estate along with a man named Joseph Beasley, who's wife was Jane TEEL, likely a relative of Jeremiah's wife. In Jan 1852, Jackson Co IL, he took his brother Joseph to court in a dispute over something Joseph removed from the estate before it was settled. On the 1850 census for Jackson Co. IL, Jeremiah lives next door to his mother, Sarah.

Children of Jeremiah and Elizabeth were as follows:
1.TIMOTHY,b. abt 1844 IL
2.JOHN,b. abt 1847 IL
3.IRAIN (IRENE ?),b. abt 1849 IL

V.HIRAM, b.1820-1830; d. 1848 Jackson Co. IL,estate papers filed by Simon Myers, administrator,do not mention a wife or children, and I can find no marriage record for him; his only asset was a debt owed to him by a man in Williamson Co. IL.
note: we believe that Hiram may have been a son of Richard, but the evidence is very sketchy on this at the moment.

VI. ABSALOM,b. abt 1821 Monroe Co KY. He married abt 1844 in KY or TN, NANCY CRAWFORD, daughter of JAMES and ELIZABETH CRAWFORD. Absalom and Nancy are found on the 1850 census of Jackson Co TN. They left TN before 1858 and went to TX. Absalom served with the 4th TX Cavalry, Hardeman's Reg't Co.B during the Civil War. This Reg't consisted of men enrolled from counties in south Texas.

Children of Absolam and Nancy were as follows:
1. SARAH,b. abt 1845 TN. She married 05 June 1863 in Lavaca Co TX, JOHN MOORE.
2. RACHEL,b. 08 Mar 1848 TN; d. 05 Oct. 1900 Karnes Co. TX. She married,probably in TX, abt 1863 WILEY THOMAS KELLY,b.25 Mar 1844 Carroll Co. MS;d.12 Feb 1931 DeWitt Co. TX.
3. JAMES W.,b. abt 1849 TN.
4. GEORGE RILEY, b.abt 1858 TX. He married 14 Oct, 1875,probably in Lavaca Co TX, MESSANAH "MITTIE" ELIZABETH FISK, daughter of BATEMAN W. FISK and CATHERINE GILKEY.
Riley and Mittie had four known children:
1. ARTHUR, b.1877 TX, married 10 Jan 1901 in Karnes Co TX, LOVIE CUSTER.
2. ROBBIE,b. 1878 TX
3. ARCHY,b. 1879 TX; married 08 July, 1901 in Karnes Co TX LILA BUTLER.
4. OLEN BARNUM, b. 05 June 1883 in Hallettsville, Lavaca Co TX;d. 15 Mar 1954 in Kingsville, TX; married ANNIE LOU SHARP.

VII. JOSEPH,b.1828 Warren Co. KY;d.abt 1865/66 Jackson Co.IL. He married Nov 24, 1848 in Jackson Co IL MARY ANN MYERS,b.1829 KY, believed to be the sister of Simon Myers who administered the estate of Hiram Skipworth. Found on the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Jackson Co. IL. Mary Ann filed his estate papers in Mar 1866. She remarried to William C. YOUNG 12 Dec 1866. Joseph is buried in the McKinney Hill Cemetery, Carterville Twnshp, Williamson Co IL. No date of death given on transcription of cemetery, the burial information online was obtained from the Honor Roll List of Illinois. The transcription of this cemetery has his name spelled as Shipworth and gives his company and infantry number.

Information from the Muster and Descriptive Roll of Co. H, 31st IL Reg't of Infantry on Joseph Skipworth:

Private, age 33, 5'5" tall, black hair, black eyes, dark complexion, married, farmer.Born in Warren Co, KY. Enlisted at Cairo, Jackson Co IL on Sept 9,1861, mustered into service on Sept 18,1861 by Capt.Pitcher. Re-enlisted as a Veteran on Jan 5,1864. Mustered out with the rest of the company on July 19,1865.
When Joseph re-enlisted in 1864, he gave his place of birth as Monroe Co KY. Description of him was different also, light hair, light eyes. Yet considering that the date of his re-enlistment matches with the date given for that re-enlistment on the muster roll of his company and the ages are consistent, it has to be the same man.

Children of Joseph and Mary Ann were as follows:

1.JAMES K. P.,b. 16 Nov 1849 Jackson Co. IL; d. 28 June 1910 Jackson Co IL. He married 03 Sept 1874 in Jackson Co IL MALINDA BUSH,b. 10 Oct 1855. 3 known children: Thomas E.,b. 1876,d 1877, James Francis,b.06 Feb 1878, and Robert Riley Bush Skipworth, b. 17 Sept 1896;d. 16 Dec 1943, buried at McKinney Hill Cemetery in Williamson Co IL, same cemetery as his grandfather Joseph. Riley served in WWI.
2.JOHN,b. abt 1855 Jackson Co. IL
3.THOMAS,b. abt 1858 Jackson Co IL
4.MILLIE,b. abt 1859 Jackson Co IL

5.JOANNA, b.abt 1860. She married 19 Feb 1873 in Jackson Co IL WILLIAM CLUNCH. It appears she married very young. She was not yet born in June 1860 when the census was taken, yet she is mentioned in the estate papers for Joseph in 1866. The marriage record was found in the IL marriage database. These records have been transcribed by hand and perhaps the date is an error.

In the 1850 census there is a 15 yr old female named Margaret living in Joseph's household, supposedly with the last name Skipworth, but I have found no info on her, the census states her birthplace as IL, which is not possible if she was a younger sister of Joseph and the others. And the 1840 Warren Co KY census record of Richard's household does not show a female child of 5 years. I believe she may have been the child of one of Richard's sons; the most likely candidate seems to be Hiram who died in 1848.
Margaret Mable Skipworth married Benjamin CLARK in IL and I am looking for more information on her.

VIII.  JOHN ? - In census records for Richard there was one more son and in tax records for Cumberland Co KY there was a John Skipworth paying taxes on a horse in 1834. Until recently, we thought that this was John W. Skipworth who married Martha Crabtree. Martha was born 1820 in Jackson Co TN. But new information is that J.W. Skipworth was the son of Hosea Skipworth and Cassandra WARD. Hosea was a son of Nathan Skipper, and the brother of John Skipper/Skipworth of Maury Co TN. J.W. Skipworth settled in Centralia, Marion Co IL. Have information on his family. As Redding Skipworth is known to have been in Centralia at one time also, I am researching the possibility that Richard and Hosea were related. And am still looking for the John Skipworth who was in Cumberland Co KY and trying to determine if he was another son of Richard.

I have not yet found any information for the daughter of Richard and Sarah indicated by the census records.
